John Coltrane with Eric Dolphy: Evenings at the Village Gate Vinyl
Featuring 90 minutes of never-before-heard material, this stunning new addition to John Coltrane’s catalogue captures the legendary saxophonist playing at New York’s Village Gate club in the summer of 1961, leading his short-lived but hugely influential quintet including quixotic multi-instrumentalist Eric Dolphy. These incendiary live performances feature Coltrane favourites “My Favourite Things”, “Impressions” and “Greensleeves”, as well as a breathtaking feature for Dolphy’s bass clarinet on “When Lights Are Low”, and the only known non-studio recording of Coltrane’s “Africa”, featuring Art Davis on bass. It’s a major discovery and an absolute must for all fans of the great John Coltrane.
